what state do you live in? im going to assume by a couple pounds we are talking about marijuana because a key or coke/heroin isn't going to in no fucking way lead to probation, and in most cases weed is no exception. dude should be looking at fed time if he's a distributor with that kind of weight. my thoughts are either A. he's completely full of shit or B. he snitched on all types of people to cover his ass and cut himself a deal.

in any case he seems like someone you should definitely avoid at all costs. snitch or habitual liar, neither of these things are traits of a quality human being.
