I heard felt is good, but what about other fabrics like cotton?
And what could I improvise with?

oh yeah inside my printers ink cartidges (epson r3100) theres a sponge thing that they printer ink is absorbed into to stop leaks and stuff, i cut one out and clean it out and thats a beast, idk if all ink cartridges are like this though

i always use medical gauze with all my mops, they seem to go well on many surfaces dependent how hard you push on it and the roughness or the surface. But i do most common surfaces but i don't do too much concrete with this as it destroys the nib. but over all its pretty good.

I use a bit from a old sock lol. It works fantastic and drips. A ton. I would suggest a sponge of fabric from like a shirt or sock

Maybe try a folded piece of felt but make sure it fits tight
