First off, you have the racist skinheads (usually referred to by anti-racist skinheads has "boneheads"), and then you have the anti-racist skinheads, usually called "trad skins" (short for traditional) or "antifa" skins (short for antifacist). I wrote my senior thesis on the origins of the skinhead culture, so I'll try to explain it as concisely as I can.
In Britain, in the 60s, there were groups of working-class cockney youths who listened to reggae and rockabilly music. Due to their blue collar jobs, they were often forced to shave their heads and wear steel-toe boots (trademarks of the modern skinhead). All over England, these youths began forming bands that incorporated reggae with modern rock and roll, and later, early punk influences could be recognized. This type of music was called "Oi". There's a lot of speculation as to where the name came from. The most popular notion is that it is the southern, cockney version of the word "aye", which means "yes," or "yeah." You know how lots of rock bands say "yeah yeah yeah" as verbal filler in their songs? Same with oi.
There is no difference between a "skin" and a "skinhead." Skin is just an abbreviation.
Skinheads get a bad rap these days. As the oi! movement circulated through Britain, certain nationalists like Nicky Crane (the homosexual neo-nazi who later died of AIDS) formed racist bands. Naturally, the media began picking up on these violent groups, and the reputation soon came about that skinheads were a racist organization, when in reality, maybe 1 out of every 10 skinheads is a bigot. Groups like SHARP (skinheads against racial prejudice, of which i am a member) formed to violently rid the scene of the boneheads. However, movies like Romper Stomper and American History X perpetuate the negative and completely unjustified stereotype of skins as racists.
Punks are different from skinheads in almost every respect. While skins were modest and not as scene-focused, punks were about one thing: chaos. They dressed with the purpose of disgusting outside society, and their appearence reflected their "fuck-you" attitudes. The music spawned from artsy rock and roll bands like Richard Hell and the Voidoids, The Velvet Underground, MC5, and the Dead Boys. The songs were brief, amateurish, and juvenile which struck a chord with the disillusioned New York city youth of the 1970s.
As Oi! spread to the US, and punks and skinheads began noticing similar themes and sounds in each others music, and began attended each others shows. Unfortunately, tensions were always a problem as punks and skins both felt their scenes were being "invaded". Today, there is a HUGE concentration on punk and skin unity in both genres of music, with the attitude of "hey, we're gonna keep coming to each other's shows, so let's just chill out and be friends."
I could write more, but I won't. That's Punk and Oi! in a nutshell.
much obliged.
