the flash goes off before your sensor is exposed to light; so that it can optically trigger the rest of your set up (which is timed to go off while the sensor is being exposed).

if youre sceptic about it not effecting the image, turn off all of your external flashes and shoot a dark room with your commander flash (set to - -) up and then again with it down. Seeking knowledge is never dumb.

I dunno what you're expecting. No matter what camera you use the 'pics' are gonna look exactly the same. The D7000 you got is the best DSLR in the market right now period. You need to stop worrying about gear so much. Oh, and don't get a 24-70 because its silly to have that on a DX camera. get the 17-55 2.8.

i dont expect anything in terms of image quality, i think something in my brain just wants something labeled a "pro" camera. but i know tht its not the camera at all. I need for this shit ass weather to stop so i have stuff to shoot.

decided to scout some places for car shots. with i had a tripod or my flash. oh well

i think i was shooting those at gnarly high iso (can't remember and too lazy to llok at exif) but this camera does so good in low light its stupid

I've honestly gotten off the 3200 lately, been going with the 25 on the other end of the spectrum.
Still love the big grain of the 3200, though. It has it's own place and time.
