the flash goes off before your sensor is exposed to light; so that it can optically trigger the rest of your set up (which is timed to go off while the sensor is being exposed).
if youre sceptic about it not effecting the image, turn off all of your external flashes and shoot a dark room with your commander flash (set to - -) up and then again with it down. Seeking knowledge is never dumb.
