by shadow, do you mean 3d?
draw a line say 1'' long from each point or curve of the letter all of the exact same angle in the same direction. then connect the ends of each line with another line running exactly parellel to the original letter line. start with simple concepts like straight to the right or straight down, left etc., strictly panel style 3d till you get that on lock. then move on to beveling it, working different angles, perspectives etc.. hopefully that helps. rounded letters are the trickiest when your first starting out. you 'r' tre d is pretty mangled too eh. work wit it son.
