I find it gets your adrenaline going hard...
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE LEARN HYPERFOCAL DISTANCE. I've said it so many times before it is impossible to shoot street without being an expert in this and the DOF scale on your lens.

    http://www.dofmaster.com/hyperfocal.html

It's pretty confusing at first but once you grasp it you'll be amazed...

    The jist of it is,

    [Broken External Image]:http://www.dofmaster.com/files/50_hyperfocal_focus.jpg

Set INFINITY (∞) to f/16 on the depth of field scale as above, then set your lens to f/16, and then boom, everything from beyond about a meter to 2 meters (depending on the focal length of your lens) will be perfectly sharp.

Nailing this technique and so long as there is enough light to shoot at f/16, means you don't even have to focus at all, just bring the camera to your eye or from your hip, and shoot.

BUT READ ALL OF IT AND UNDERSTAND IT!
Glad your getting into street photography. You should hit the beaches or go into the ghettos the east end or whatever... Get some grimy shit.

i will always try and shoot nothing longer than 1/125 handheld and especially to try capture something moving unless i am going to 100% pan with it...i try and shoot 1/250 to get no blur etc....but yer it pretty dark so even at f1.2 on 400 my cameras light meter said it would be mega underexposed....

haha my word...i mean this is probably as I have never studied or taken any classes in photography...but i have never even noticed that on my lenses mate....that makes my life about 10000000x easier haha....a 2 min read on it and it all makes sense...should hopefully make my life a tad easier!...safe for that for sure mate...well ive got another 5 rolls of film im gonna go out and shoot this weekend...so i should hopefully have some good ones in amongst them all...also what kinda shutter speed are you shooting on? as im around 1/250...i try and pan with the people but im hoping it wont be that blurred due to them being quite close on a 28mm lens and moving fairly fast through crowds sometimes....

also i tried the sunny 16 rule...and in london...its never sunny so i adapted likeit says and my cameras light meter wants none of it...it says it was always to dark....maybe i just need an actual sunny day to use it...

haha once again...im rocking that blue fuckin coat! i only wear this coat like once a week..and it always seem to be in central london when my woman has her camera just taking odd photos of me :/

You set your shutter speed to the closest to what your ISO is. So for example, for 400 film you set your shutter speed to 500th, for 100 film set to 125th. etc etc.
If it is overcast you should be shooting at around f/8 or below. Try to ignore the light meter, or even take the batteries out.
Try using your eyes and feeling the light and not letting your camera dictate your settings. Thats true photography in my opinion.

    f/16 for clear sunny sky
f/8 for overcast with very faint shadow
f/5.6 for overcast with no shadows
f/4 and below for shade or inside shooting.

    It's pretty easy.

yer thats what i gathered...but i was having to shoot at f2.8 at 1/125 on 200 iso film...and it was a pretty bright day....but yer as you said it is probably getting the eye for it and knowing whats right...and as bad as it is...i trust my pentax's light meter 99% of the time...its scarily NEVER let me down...

But then you will forever only be able to use a camera that has a light meter.
I love the fact that I can pick up the oldest shittiest camera and be able to use it based purely on my knowledge of light.

honestly sunny 16 wasnt that hard to learn, after a few months i got the feel for it and i can shoot at night, inside, whatever.
it makes me feel more accomplished if i know i figured out the exposure in my head

Most of these are sweet! Not sure about that black male in the leather jacket. I wish the old white grey attired man was more in focus. Up close and personal, I love it. Great exposures, and nice shooting partner ;]

safe matey! yer same i liked the one of the guy in the grey jacket and what not...i wish i had framed him higher so his feet werent so close to being cut off...i think its cos he was walking fast and i was on 1/125 and was close up etc...just gotta get used to it...i prefer all the shots with my 28mm over the 50mm....so i cant wait to get the other film which is purely the 28mm...

london looks like a pretty cool place.
spent the last 2 hours downtown for my portrait project, having to ask for pictures is such a pain in the ass. starting to learn which demographics are ruder than others.
and there are waayyyyy too many boring architectuve shots on the last page

These are nice, whatever your scanning technique/film type is I wanna know it. beautiful tones and colour.
Street photography is much tougher than it sounds. Good composition is really hard and often happens by accident.
One thing that I'm noticing you are doing is walking around taking photos of people just doing nothing, walking around, standing there, EXCEPT for the last one which is really nice.
You need to start noticing moments, the little every day things that happen in the street, capturing those is the ultimate. The one of the black guy trying to creep around people and nearly hitting the car mirror is nice and is exactly what I'm tlaking about. Just those little bits in street life you find annoying, trying to avoid people, walk past people, etc etc. You can see the annoyance in his face.
I'm not sure if you've seen this video or not, but I watch this atleast once a week for inspiration.
    WATCHHH.
