you def need some sense of style before even getting up..
can control comes with time, takes practice and is only rly achieved after painting a bunch..

as for what kindve piece id rather look at..
i'd rather see some style over something clean

only cuz if u have style when painting, yr well on yr way to getting that clean shit. just takes practice.

you need both, if you have an ill style but can't paint it then it's useless for gettin' up and if you have can control but put up toy ass shit it is also useless...you need both

but in the end, style is more important because you can learn can control, but if you have a weak style it's harder to progress it.

I don't really see the point in painting a clean peice if your letters are bunk. As much as can control brings everything together, last time I checked graffiti was about the letters...

you could draw dopest sketch on your book/paper using pen, but it will be different execution if U apply to a wall (any surface) using graffiti.
