okay so the first thing i got to say is that (dont take this badly) you should not be doing so much as pieces as much as study of the letters. what i mean by that is that you need to stop worrying about things like fill, back round, or caricatures. start this proses by just writing the word out first lower case then uppercase try to observe certain things about the letters what do they have in common how are they symmetrical do they have a more up and down emphasis like a T or side to side like an X or maybe both like a K. dose it consist manly of curves like a S,O,C or strait lines like H L or Z. then try to decide witch line within the letter is the most important to its form that is to say its root line, usually the first line you make when righting the letter naturally like the straight down line in an R try to keep this line intact (dont fuck with it) or it makes the letter sloppy. just start thinking about it in this way experiment and remember if it looks good as a tag it will look good as a piece also you might be like nine and this is all way over you head but hope that helps
