Interview:

We had the please to sit down with DEFY during Style Discipline to talk about the jam and all this Graffiti in Puerto Rico;

How would you describe the graff scene and community in Puerto Rico?

So graffiti in Puerto Rico is, I’d say is a mix of a lot of different styles and influences from other parts of the world. I’d say the biggest influence would come from New York cause a lot of our first writers used to live in New York. They had their start in New York and brought that whole New York style and mentality to the island. And I think that was the basis for graffiti locally and it’s just developed from there. And you know, with the introduction of the internet and all sorts of access points to graffiti from all over the world, I think it has opened a very dope window into what’s going, as well as the possibilities of graffiti. I think our people here are taking advantage of that and applied it in their own way to their own conditions here. So I think graffiti is …… we’ll get our identity soon I think, I believe but it’s definitely a mix from all over.

Whats the story behind the ADM crew?

The ADM Crew is I’d say about almost 20 years old now, since its foundation. It was founded by Pun 18 and Son. Basically Pun 18 brought all of s together in some form or fashion. It’s definitely a family, you know like a crew supposed to be. And besides from that it’s just a group of friends that are all from different walks of life, from different mentalities, different interest, different expressions and it makes for a cohesive but very, how do I say… a very eclectic bunch a people. So, that like a funky, it’s a funky crew. That’s how the guys always call it.

What’s the history of this Jam; Style Discipline?

Style Discipline was the brain child, I’d say, of Pun. It was an idea that started to develop in early 2011 and yeah, like it never got off the ground in terms of logistics and finding the good and big enough space for what we wanted and for what is this jam is right now. This is what we wanted to be this is what we envisioned and when we first started thinking of it, you know and like 7 years later here we are. But it’s basically, just Pun wanted to bring to the island this huge group of different styles, and different approaches to graffiti and different mentalities, and people from all over the world and just come here to the island and do their work, show their work. So that the people here on the island could be exposed to that. Because we’re an island we are little bit secluded, so we very rarely get any real close contact with styles from all over, it’s usually through the internet and just to have this much influence, this much style, this much different approaches to graffiti in one place in the island I think it will help the local scene grow and continue to expand and evolve. And just you know be inspired by the work that the people that coming here doing. And that was always the main plan and some years later here we are.

Any shout outs?

Any shout outs? Aw man I have to shout out everybody that made it down here. Like I said it’s been an amazing time. Such a crazy, crazy line up. I never thought that we would get this to happen here, so I’m just super appreciative to all of the people that took their time and made the effort to come down and chill and enjoy the island especially everything that has happened since the storm. It’s definitely a huge boost to our spirits and I know the spirits of a lot of people here in the community too. So like just everybody that came down and came to support, came to like be apart of this. We’re definitely grateful and everybody welcome to come down next year and make it happen again, so we hope to have you guys.
