The equivalent of a DX 18-55mm in FX format is approx 28-70mm, which is both pretty wide and quite zoomy. but if you need a lot wider and a lot more zoom, a better choice for you would be to buy a wide angle lens, and a zoom lens seperately.

I suggest a 11-16mm f/2.8 tokina for the wide end

    and a 50-135mm f/2.8 tokina for a zoom

I have both and they are great.

Why amazon? That 50 you posted won't auto focus on your D3000.

Buy this as a 50mm for a cheap as fuck option, manual focus though, some are even on ebay for like $40:

    http://cgi.ebay.com/Nikon-Nikkor-50...era_Lenses?hash=item3357a7cb50#ht_4323wt_1167

or if you have cash for an auto focus 35/50mm equivalent:

    http://cgi.ebay.com/Nikon-35mm-f-1-...iewItemQQptZCamera_Lenses?hash=item2ea95ace78

And yeah, that zoom's ok but I doubt you'd ever use it. Buy a zoom once you can afford a constant f/2.8 zoom and shoot enough portraits for you to have a proper use for it.

just made a nice purchase to a white and black muslin backdrop, and the stand as well

...making a few stops around the city tomorrow to get familiar with lighting and ill probobly make that purchase later this week, not quite sure if i wanna go for continuous lighting or strobes with a modeling light, either way im gonna go for translucent umbrellas and bounce panels

    im pretty excited

but i want the modeling light yo

i plan on banking off people, therfor i gotta look "profesional"...feel me?

im gonna but that 4 unit remote flash later on for outdoor shit, but studio lighting trumps flashes for indoor portraits, the lightings too harsh, yeah they have diffusers and soft boxes, but it doesnt compare...and theres soo many options for diffusing your lighting for studio lighting

thoughts on the camera: pos, sorry...

for the price tag you could have bought an slr, the d40 sits at just about $100 more than that

you can probobly set the shutter speed a bit faster or slower than your default setting and you can change the iso

I feel buying studio lighting at this stage would be a bit silly. using strobes with umbrellas works a charm for softening light.

The only way I can see you being able to mess with your shutter speeds is changing the setting from like sports, which is a high speed, to like nightshot, or fireworks, which is lower.

So a D40 would be better than a D3000? They're the same price.

So if I get a fisheye for one of those camera I would have to manual focus it everytime?

    edit

and why are Aspherical Fisheyes alot cheaper than the circular ones?
