I'm pretty dead-set on getting a Rebel XSI. It's right at the tip of my pricerange for the moment, I've played around with it, and love it. I'm mostly interested in shooting people (I may actually give you an infraction or something for cracking a joke about 'shooting people'). People are most interesting to me. I'm pretty set on the camera itself, unless anyone has a better suggestion for peopleshooting, but any other reccomendations for lenses and such?

The XSi is a great camera, I have one and it does pretty much everything I could ask for in a camera.

The higher iso's are a little noisy, but not any worse then other cameras in that price range.

Get a 50mm 1.8 (1.4 if you got the money) and a flash
The kit lens is pretty decent stoped down, but it's crap wide open.

Thanks. Now, what does "The kit lens is pretty decent stoped down, but it's crap wide open." mean.

    just get a d40, everyone go buy a d40

    im buying one next week

get a cable/remote shutter release if your into night shit, nikon d40, tripod, and imo a circular polarizer if your doing buildings, you can really work some cool shit into your photos with that

i wouldnt...the stock of these cameras are limited and your gonna be kicking yourself in the ass if your local camera shop is out

or if your an online buyer...cool, but i promise you after christmas your chances of finding one will be narrowed, especially at the great price their at now

..but then again i always jump on products fearing they'll become un-available

Thanks. Are there any particular reasons why you recommend the d40?
What exactly does a remote shutter release and circular polarizer do exactly?
I'm interested and taking photos such as these:

Fuck now you're making me rethink what I should try to buy this Christmas. I want a DSLR, and this is a cheap option.

    Still considering.

EDIT: Also, any suggestions on the Canon EOS Rebel XTI? It seems like it takes shots faster between shots and without lag (which is something I'm looking for).

im not really a big fan on canons, i had a rebel before i had my nikon, and it just doesnt compare, are you talking about burst shots? why do you need it to do that?
i would definetly go with the d40, such an amazing camera at an amazing price...you cant go wrong

kzmachine, a remote shutter will allow you to keep the shutter open as long as you want it for until you stop it, theres a bulb option on the camera...this is good for night shots, or long exposure shots

a circular polarizer is a polarized filter for your lense that will adjust as you rotate the filter, it basicaly takes the glare off of reflective things

you said you wanted to get into street shots, theres buildings on streets as well as cars, and plenty of other shit, you rotate the filter and bam! majorly reduced glare

i recommend the d40 because as a beginner, you dont wanna throw alot of money into things you arent going to use, the d40 is a great beginner level camera that you can build off of for a price you cant beat, its rugged, its durable, its simple and easy to use, its compatable with almost anything you can throw at it, extremely versatile...its a camera that gives you just about everything you'll need and nothing you dont

How do polarizers work with the camera, exactly? All I can find are polarizers in 77, 52, and 58mm, but someone recommended I get a 50mm lens. Would it still work?

    fasho

so i got my support system for my backdrop, 3 muslins and my lighting is coming on tuesday

kinda fucked up though, i realized after i got the muslin backdrops that musin is supposed to be wavy, you work waves into the background or w/e...which is the exact thing i dont want in my portraits and shit...so i had to order a pull down vinyl backdrop...supposedly this shits easy to clean, you just clean it with a wet sponge, which is pretty bitchin

shipping was a bitch...it has to be specially handled since its 10ft long...ffucccccck

along with the d40 im buying soon, im gonna buy the 24-85, i heard its an amazing lens

the mm size on your lens has nothing to do with the diameter of the lens or the size of the filter, on the end of lens or anywhere on the lens there will be a symbol of a 0 with a line through it and a # next to it...thats the size filter you need to get

the mm #'s your looking at is focal length

polarizers by themselves will spin freely, when screwed onto the end of the lens, you rotate the filter until the desired look is achieved...as you rotate it youll see the glare and what-not vanish and re-appear

    my keyboard sucks ass

I'm planning on buying a D40 soon too. Probably gonna grab a 24-85 mm lense too, I used one the other day at a photoshoot, it was quite lovely. Might have to check out this circular polarizer mumbo jumbo, seems pretty useful.

This is the guy that I've been following around on these shoots. Definitely not a big asshole like other photographers have been described, and is definitely helping learn a lot more key points on lighting and whatnot.

Because nikons are strange, some lenses have the focus motor in the lens, some don't (and require the motor to be in the camera, which some cameras like the d40 don't have) so, if you end up with a camera with no motor and a lens with no motor, you're not going to autofocus.

Canon's EF lenses ALL have the motor in the lens.
any canon can mount any EF canon lens
with an adapter they can mount any FD canon lens, and any nikon lens.
