The culprits painted words and figures on one side of each bus, forcing authorities to pull them off the road for repairs. Made in Quebec, the buses have been operating in Kelowna for about a year. “They‘ll go to the body shop (today) to get rid of the graffiti,” one transit worker who requested anonymity said Tuesday at the Hardy Avenue terminal. Taggers become more active with the arrival of warmer weather, writing or painting names, dates, slogans and messages on publicly accessible surfaces. The city wants more people to report the vandalism by calling the graffiti hotline at 764-5004. “It‘s really important this time of year to get out there and deal with any vandalism that has been accumulating over the winter months and really extend that ownership of their property,” said Colleen Cornock, graffiti eradication co-ordinator. About $400,000 is spent each year to remove graffiti in the Central Okanagan.“We really want to raise awareness among property owners that if they‘ve been dealing with graffiti to just continue on with the paint-outs and the cleanups,” said Cornock. Parents are urged to look for signs their children may be involved in graffiti, including: – Paint all over their hands and clothes on a regular basis. – A collection of spray paint cans or magic markers. – Tags that start on teens‘ clothing and notebooks appearing in the community. “The best way to deal with vandalism once it has happened is to get out there and clean it up as quickly as possible,” said Cornock. “The longer it‘s out there, the more recognition, notoriety you are giving the vandals.”
