I'm a bit confused as to why someone would want to ride one of these as appose to a bike with gears? From what i have heard these are dangerous and uncomfortable, is it all about being cool and hip?

They are only dangerous if you don't know how to ride one. And I don't know where this "they are uncomfortable" thing comes from. A bike is very personal thing. You choose the parts the work right for you. My saddle felt like hell when i first got it and it dug into my taint, but once I adjusted it and got it in the right position for my body, it's extremely comfortable.

Its not all about being cool and hip. They are much easier to maintain than a geared bike. If something goes wrong, its obvious. pretty much the only thing that can happen is the chain falls off, in which case you put it back on. Other than that, keep parts greased, tires inflated, and you are good to go.

I personally think it's a bit silly to do if you live in a VERY hilly area, but if there are only a few small hills around you, it is great.

its an amazing feeling to just ride a bike and not worry about if and when you should shift gears. just keep pedaling. its simple.

best off just building a proper road bike with a freewheel, gears, and holy shit, breaks! track bikes and fixed gears are just some stupid hipster trend.

no they're not, they originally come from messengers in NYC, so many haters for these bikes, whats stupid about them? try riding one before you knock it. and skidding etc on them is mad fun, cant do that shit on a bmx or road bike... (apart from breaking)

The reason they are more difficult to ride is that there is no freewheel. So if the back wheel is moving, so are the pedals. you can't coast. it's like a bigwheel you rode as a kid.

Fixies look super clean and sleek, but the faggot scene kids that parade around campus with them are far from "cool". I hate them becuase 1/10 people don't know how to fucking ride them correctly.

fixed gear bikes originally came from the track. messengers road track and fixed gear bikes with no free wheels or brakes so fools wouldn't steal their shit. They never did it voluntarily until it become popular and thus a trend. ive also ridden fixed gear bikes for long enough to know and my knees are testament to it. i'm fine with riding track bikes on the track but riding them on the street is throwing modern technology to the wind. you can climb hills on some gnarly gear all you want and end up blowing your knees out, i prefer gears and walking later in life.

fixed gears are better exercise , forced to continue pedaling and not coast.

you cant coast with fixed gear bikes, you just keep peddling and skid to stop, thats why people say its so hard

try getting them on the pedals after letting them coast, you'll break an ankle.
