The only reason why brand names are factored in with bongs is the glass quality and thickness. That's all that really matters besides if the down stem is diffused or if it has an ash catcher or other little special things such as percs or ice pinches. Anyways, yes you would be better off buying a good quality tube like a brand name such as U.S. Tubes compared to a local tube being sold that is china glass, many times if the glass is say 5mm thick only the neck is 5mm and the base and joint may very well be a lot more brittle and easy to break because it is more thin and doesn't remain as thick throughout the whole bong. Reliable brand makes such as Roor, Illadelph, and U.S. Tubes have very professional glass blowers and have to make sure the thickness stays equal throughout the bong, while others will make the neck thick and leave the joint or beaker part thin making it not as sturdy and good as quality.

Anyways, yes it doesn't really matter if you get a nice brand name bong or a local one in terms of if it gets you higher, having a diffused downstem does help you take smoother hits helping you rip it harder but besides that... the difference is just glass quality, glass thickness, and glass consistency, all pointing to how long the bong will last or how vulnerable it is to breaking. If your careful with a cheap bong then good for you, you can save money and still get just as high, but if your clumsy and have cash to spend you can always invest in a 9mm thick U.S. tube to prevent it from breaking, or your friends from breaking it.. plus nothing wrong with having such a thick bong that you could use it as a weapon towards any burglars and still be able to pack a bowl and rip it after your done.
