    Hello!

I am currently doing a project on the psychology, and motivations of individuals that perform graffiti/street art.

Can a few of you take some time to answer a few questions? It would be greatly appreciated.

    1. What motivated you to start performing graffiti/street art?

    2. What motivates you to continue performing graffiti/street art?
2a. If you are not performing graffiti/street art anymore, what motivated you to stop?

    3. Do you think performing graffiti/street art is deviant? Why or why not?

    Thank you very much!

    1. I was young when I first started getting interested. What got me interested and motivating was the thought that someone could do such cool looking work on the streets, in hard to get to spots, and not get caught or anything. Barely anyone knows who the writer is. I guess the mystery nothing.

    2. I'm addicted. I guess my motivation is seeing my work on walls and in numerous places, and trying to get that tag or throwie perfect every time.

    3. Yes, it is. We go out there to write on walls, something you're taught not to do since you're a child. We destroy shit, we bomb. There's no denying that we cause hundreds of dollars in damages. We're vandals.

    1. I lead a pretty bland/boring life before graff. Once I started I got a big rush out of it and it boosted my (alter) ego.

2a. The consequences are very real and I almost learned that the hard way. I should still be in prison with a couple felonies and no future plans.

    3. It is deviant, that's why it's graffiti. If it wasn't illegal it wouldn't have it's own culture and it would be more of a branch of calligraphy. Even legal walls are still apart of graffiti because of the culture and stigma surrounding it.

    1. bitches motivated me to start graffiti. I seen some kid back in the day mackin all these tasty hunnies and I asked him how he dun it. He said he wrote the bitches name on a wall witta sharpie and thats all it took to get his dick wet, so I copied him and said I done it first, like a true gangsta.

    2. I continue to do it cause the bitches. You dont get any fine bitches by sittin on the couch all day nіgga, you gotta get out there and sharpie some playgrounds to get that pussy.

    3. Deviant? I think at one point in time yes, but now its slowly pushing away from being deviant. A lot of people dont mind it anymore, and will even pay for it, when half the *****s I know dont pay to do it o_O. Would having sex with dead bodies still be deviant if all the young kids and hipsters emulated it, and started playing that shit on mtv? You see some nіgga fuckin a dead body in the back of a music video instead of some graffiti backdrop and have that shit widely duplicated to where you aint cool unless your fuckin dead bodies? (which would actually be pretty cool)

    1. I perform this because it just happens to be what I am good at, there is no better art than letter form. Some people find out about their true selves playing sports or whatever, I found my true self doing graff... its all for personal gain... people that do it to be "cool" or whatever are artfags.
    2. I am motivated by the want to keep improving and getting better. Also you get to know the history of your area from a different perspective and you get to meet some chill people. Graff teaches originality, respect and various other concepts of life.
    3. Of course its deviant, because the government says so... Personally I like it, some don't... sometimes in certain context a blank wall can make a space look real crisp and clean. Graff is not per say an acceptable artform, but it is a fine art... it has all the elements; space, form, texture, line, shape, colour and value.

Its not an addiction per say... Addiction is an excuse in graff... We consciously know what we are doing... Everyone wants to say fight the system an all that crap... In the end you just do it cause you can...

It can very well be an addiction, but some use it as an excuse. But after painting for a while one can get psychological withdrawals from not painting. It makes me really depressed and angry when I dont/cant get out and paint. Its not a chemical addiction like a drug, and im not gonna suck someone off to get my fix, but but everyday things can be a psychological addiction. Like taking a morning shit.

    1. the boring streets, the rush and local friends that wrote.

    2. getting up, getting better, and not sitting on my couch all day

    3. yeah. its deviant, were 'vandals'; we cause damage, but at the same time its a form of art. i dont expect it to be socially acceptable, but it wouldnt hurt if more people understood it.

Thank you very much for all of your answers so far. They are extremely helpful, and I appreciate your candidness. I could still use some more answers though!

Is anyone else able to answer my questions?

I also would like to know why you choose public space as your media, even though it is illegal?

    Thank you!

    1. I liked the thrill of doing something illegal

    2. I still enjoy the rush, but now its more wanting to push myself to see what I can and cant do.

    3. I dont believe true graffiti is deviant. But there is always some 13 year old kid that thinks its hilarious and cool to spraypaint 'fuck' or 'pussy' on the side of a school, church, etc. and that kid gets lumped in with the true artists. There is your deviant.

    1. What motivated you to start performing graffiti/street art?

It's really been something I've been interested in ever since I was very little. I always saw it and thought it looked amazing and I thought it was really awesome that people could go out and break the rules to create something so artistic. The way you feel when your paint hits the wall, it's a mix of artistic relief and really just feeling a disregard for anything that's happening in your life at that moment. It's quite addictive, and when you see your work that you put out the next day no matter how good or bad it is you get a feeling of accomplishment. Like that's you.

    2. What motivates you to continue performing graffiti/street art?

The same reasons listed above. I wouldn't say I keep doing it because I'm addicted, I'm just happier when I'm painting. I don't feel like I'm really depending on anybody. I have this sense of really knowing who I am.

2a. If you are not performing graffiti/street art anymore, what motivated you to stop?

I quit one time when I was 14. I was painting this wall and these people came out of their house and started chasing me. I booked it all the way home it was not a good experience. I was so innocent then and the thought of actually stealing from a store or being arrested seemed so scary that I just decided to quit right then. But now I can drive which is helpful and I have a good friend that writes or is learning to write with me.

    3. Do you think performing graffiti/street art is deviant? Why or why not?

Oh for sure. The feeling that it gives you is so much like, "Yeah fuck the rest of the planet right now, this is what I'm going to do. If you don't like it, I really don't care." It helps me vent my teenage angst. Graffiti and Music. ;)

    Your welcome man.
