Hi! so i'm pretty new to this scene and i'm feeling discouraged because 1. i don't know any other writers and 2. i'm female and i've never even heard of another girl writer soooooooo.. is this a lost cause? haha.... i'm an artist so i have the ability to create really cool stuff and i'm practicing my tag around my hometown. should i just keep tagging and have fun or?? anything helps. i thought joining a crew/meeting a crew would help but i dont really know where to start. any general advice?
Just because you're a girl it doesn't change anything. there's quite a few female writer's / Street artists, Like claw, Miss17, Mickey, Swoon, Miss Van the list goes on. It may pay to do abit of homework into the history of graffiti.
Yo, welcome to the world of Graff. As Dfekt said, learn the history of graffiti and get some insight on it. I recommend watching Piece by Piece, Stylewars, and Infamy. When it comes to doing graffiti, start simple. Plenty of tutorials on here.
graffiti "scene". the skill of graffiti its self which you wish to master is not a scene so theres no need for one if gaining skill is what you desire. if what you desire is to gain knowledge of gaining skill. if skill is what you desire... if you desire skill. all i ever did in high school was draw in a notebook every fucking day and when i got home i would do exchanges with other toy level writers and enter battles with other toy level writers. i didn't do it because i knew that if i focused on it i would get better, i realized thats what happened later though and i owed it all to genuinely loving this shit and its spending all my time doing it what its all attributed to.
Graffiti is a wonderful, but also harsh, world. You ever hear of Google perhaps? In the time it took for you to register and post you could have googled women and graffiti and had your answer. I know graf seems like a cool thing to do but if this is your level of motivation you might want to consider investing your time in other interests. You put 'girl' all in caps, seems like attention seeking, and you will get it, but for all the wrong reasons. Anyhow, prove me wrong, and good luck to you.
watch style wars and look at bombingscience.com a bit. i read a book called graffiti world a while back and even though its more street art oriented i learned a lot from it. read subway art too. learn from practice i guess.
I would listen to these guys and what they are saying, in terms of girl writers there are quite a few just google them.
All City Queens is a cracking book to get going with if you wanted to look purely at female graffiti. My crew gets a mention in it too. Being a writer isn't gender specific though, so I'd focus on your Letters just now and earn respect through doing, there are no shortcuts in graffiti.
Ahem is right, watch stylewars (I think you can watch it on youtube)or piece by piece, I haven't seen Bomb it so idk about that, but watch something along the lines of that and read about female writers like lady pink, Eva 62, miss van, etc. Dont be discouraged, go practice tagging or bombing, work out your handstyle if you haven't already, just practice. If you're new, I wouldn't worry about joining a crew just yet but if you want to that's fine
