I use at least two or three colors between. So for the green I used three greens. Then one yellow one one tan. I always do the darkest color first, feather the fading part by lifting the marker, and always make my strokes in the same direction. I go over the first darkest shade with the next light shade. Then go over the faded part again with the dark shade a tiny bit at a time. Before the ink dries, I go over it again with the lighter shade and I press hard to the page with the marker. I also use bubbles in paint marker or dark places to cover up places I feel didn't quite work. I often also go over fades with colored pencil too as it lightly blends. I never use blenders and I only used alcohol based to fill. Never water based. That shit sucks.

For one color 3d effects I often fill with a solid color, sometimes over simple pencil shading. Then go back over with black and white colored pencils and add hilights with paint pens or gel pens.

All of this might sound like a lot of work but it isn't really. It just takes practice and experimentation.

I don't buy expensive pens. I buy sharpies and bic sets for the basics. Anything else I buy cheapest for either touchtwin or prismacolor. Copics are unnecessary and the more expensive ones are worse. Just a waste of money. You can't have too many Grey markers of various shades on hand. Shop online and always compare prices and look for specials. Don't be afraid of cheap alternatives like letraset or Windsor and Newman. But don't buy dirt cheap art markers unless you want leaky pens with too much thinner that dry out or explode.
