Code of the streets? If it's unwritten and people are hating on toys, then how are they (we) to learn.

And this whole art vs. destruction thing, it's a fine line buti say graffiti lends itself to destruction MUCH MUCH MUCH more than art.

I'm sorry, but if you're going out and doing shit for the art of it all and hoping to have graffiti "progress" and "flourish". Get your ass to a studio or an art school and make a career of your talent. If you want to see art flourish and progress forward then why are you giving it a bad name by vandalising the city walls? Fuck that shit, if i was an artist i would work in a studio, I'm a vandal and damn proud of it, I DESTROY SHIT cause i like to. I got into graffiti so i could see my name everywhere while i take the bus. I didn't get into graffiti with the mindset of 'hmm i feel like expressing my artistic talent on mailboxes"

Now, the other side of the coin, i understand that people shouldn't be throwing shitty stuff up. Even if you're just tagging and bombing, you should STILL be in the black book working your handstyle and making your bomb flow. And when you get to painting, streetlevel is not a place to be practicing. Toys should definetley seek out chill spots and practice what they have to do there.

how do you learn? this is the god damn problem! back in the old days there wasn't the resources like there is now to find out the shit you need to know, we didn't have montana, belton or fancy caps and crazy markers, so how the fuck do you think all us learned? put some serious thought into that

I'm not sure if you realize it or not, but you may want to take into consideration the amount of big name writers in this city (and others i'm sure) that have already gone through art schools, or are currently in art schools, and who DO make money off their art but still go out there and do graffiti for what it stands for. It's not strictly about getting your name up no matter how you want to look at it, who ever it was that said it earlier had it right, if you actually enjoy graff, show some respect for it and those of us that came before you and take some time in learning how the fuck to do things half decently before stepping out your front door.

how many of you new kids can honestly say you spent at least a year rocking pieces with Canada Pride paints? i'm gonna take a shot in the dark and say not too many of you, the day you can pull off a half decent piece with paint that looks like it should be coming out of the home plumbing, thats when you know you've got something to show for.

what he fuck are you talking about "code of the streets". there are no rules in the world of graffiti, only respect for other artists. and if you dont have respect then you get what you deserve, good old fashioned beat down. toys and newbies will get crossed or painted over and thats life, but it really doesnt matter how "skilled" you are because thats a matter of opinion. the whole point is to get up and to get your work noticed, even if it is shit. at first look i'm sure any toy would asume GRAMS is newbie too, but look what he's accomplished! he has an original sence of style and he's running what? like 300 pieces in the GTA minimum. wheres the modivation for painting a master piece of art if you know only your friends are going to see it. getting up is the most important thing a grapher can do. getting reconition for your work takes skill, even if your hand style aint so tricked out.

TRUUUUUUUUUUU but like it got to be at least flowing , personally i tried getting up then i went to the books to really get it down beucase you got to learn the game and it's history also can control and other shit. it is no just about getting up but doing it with something that is worth getting up.

LOok at bustone he is everywhere but it is a piece of shit and it was all for nothing. writers don't give a shit unless it is in a crazy spot or a medium throwie that is everywhere.

Also all the KINGS like trick, ja , seen ,sake and many more , they all have fresh throws. They just don't put up shit .

Agreed, but therein lies my point, there are different attitudes to be taken towards each. I'm not for a moment ragging on anyone for going to art school and making something of their talent. By alll means power to you if that's what you want to do. Ahowever I think graffiti should be approached with a different attitude.

Additionally, what's the point of bringing up canada's pride. Is that some thing with older heads? The shittier/cheaper the medium is the more "real" it is? What's wrong with someone painting with montana cause they feel like it. On that note, i've never used montana paitn or markers, belton, OTR or any other product designed specifically for graffiti. Hell people that know me personally know how i roll and i don't care to discuss that on the internet, but meh, the point here is - why the does the medium matter? Just look at the end result and build your opinions on that.

Also i think devastator was saying that the older heads didn't have the resources that we have and asked me how i think they learned.

I have been in the hip-hop scene for a while breaking, and all my guidance came from older heads, and people willing to teach me. However a new generation of b-boys have taken to the internet for their guidance and sicne this is happening many of the older heads seem to be hating on the younger ones.

I have a notion that much the same has/is happening with the graff scene. I'm sure a few years ago much knowledge was taught by older heads, as well as a certain amount of self discovery. However, nowadays the youngins are taking the the internet, and for some reason which i don't understand (within both the b-boy and writer scene) the older heads are resenting this and seem to be hating on the younger heads.

This leaves me in an akward position. Do i try and approach and learn from these older heads that have a preconcieved notion of me being a toy and a 'fake' writer because of my useage of the internet. Or do i go to the internet which is readily available although obviously tainted in terms of teaching ability as well as the fact taht there are a bunch of wack motherfuckers out there calling themselves writers.

So tell me, where do i go to learn?

(no beef, sorry if anyone is offended)
