Battle Against Graffiti by Kelly Hayes - Story: 28807 April 17, 2007 / 8:00 am KEZA has left his mark and officials say they're fed up. KEZA is a graffiti tag that has been popping up in the Rutland area in recent months. "It's been quite prevalent in the Rutland area in the past two months, particularly in the Hollywood Road and Highway 33 area," says Graffiti Eradication & Prevention program coordinator, Colleen Cornock. She says someone plastered the KEZA tag all over a school in Black Mountain last weekend. Cornock says she doesn't know what KEZA stands for and there are a few other 'taggers' in Kelowna leaving their mark. The tags PDK and EBS have also been showing up in Kelowna in all parts of the city. Cornock says, so far, there have been no gang tags. "We have individuals working with others, but I would not call it a gang mentality. They are referred to as 'crews' which is basically a few people doing the same tag in the criminal sense." Kelowna's Graffiti and Eradication & Prevention program launched two years ago and Cornock says it's beginning to show results. "We've done an inventory for 2006 and compared it to 2005 when the program began and we've seen a reduction of 37 per cent." She says 10 youths and adults have been charged and dealt with through the Restorative Justice Program. In an effort to deal with graffiti, some communities have banned to the sale of spray paint to minors. Cornock says that's something she's considering taking to council. "I am looking into a whether a ban on selling spray paint to minors would be beneficial, however that isn't one of the top ways of dealing with graffiti. Still there is a desire in the community for such a ban." Cornock adds the best defence against graffiti is getting rid of it as soon as it appears. "As soon as you see it, get rid of it because that eliminates the notoriety that is received by the individuals who are doing it."
Corncock should learn a lesson from Gord. When you go to the media proclaiming you're reducing graffiti, Graff explodes.
