I know your happy for your homie $erge and everything, but i don't think you or anyone else is noticing that this article is really just a typical example of the news media delivering yet another fine nuance of racial ignorance. Reading the article and watching the news brief is almost like hearing 2 completely separate stories- and if i didn't watch the news brief i wouldn't of known he doesn't even use a spray can. Not once in the entire article do they cite words such as "muralist" "commissioned artwork" or even "paintbrush". Look at the way it was written on purpose, let me point out that it begins with a grim 1 liner that will set the tone for the rest of the article; stating that "we" (us civilians) have to "deal with" graffiti (artists) in all of south Florida and even (taking over) our neighborhoods. Going on to replay preconceived notions about graffiti artists such as "his name is everywhere" "hes from Liberty City""appears over night" "hanging off a ladder" "on hundreds of stores, walls and bridge polls" and continues with how he is a self proclaimed artist who dabbles with the idea of getting arrested and who knows what the good people of Liberty City want (personifying a city to a regular person would be considered "territorial" in its nature) - naming only renown ghetto cities around Miami. The most shameless and blatant element of this article is that every time they quote him they take the time to quote his phonetic ebonics, making him out to be even more uneducated.

So let me sum this article up for you: We all see graffiti as a proverbial black stain on our white picket fence of 50s white America- but have you ever met a graffiti artist? Here he is- he is a Negro who comes from the ghetto, speaks in a heavy vernacular (the pinnacle of his education) and imposes his street life into yours everyday by vandalizing public and personal space. Graffiti artists are all like him and are frustrated with the complicated world around them due to there small intellect so they decorate it with familiar images to ease there psychological pain. "Good job little Negro", as the white man grinned at the uneducated clod who considers himself the "Haitian Michaelangelo" for painting his pepsi cans.

What makes this story news and not fiction? the fact that they dug up the perfect example they needed of a dimwitted local and along with the right connotation they could serve up the perfect ribs eating stereotype. To be honest this must be the first time they didn't mention the word "gang" in an article about graffiti (or in this case about murals, because this article had absolutely nothing to do with graffiti). So whats next? I wouldn't be surprised even in Miami, if they had a news flash about a Cuban that did the salsa and stole every mans wife away at the alter, followed by his friend in the sombrero with a gold tooth serving tacos and finally the black large handed basketball player who is dating his daughter. If he truly wasn't doing it for the money or to be famous, he would of continued to have his work speak for him like it always has and celebrate his personal accomplishment in the community. $erge really meant well and without a doubt is an extremely talented ARTIST (not to be simply dismissed as a graffiti artist), i admire his work; that its geared toward people less fortunate and the positive messages to the children; but what he doesn't have the capacity to realize is that the people who filmed him were editing him for the more devious intension of painting a portrait of a fool and to retain an ignorant population.
