its funny how everybody is trying to seperate crews and gangs into two different things. they're one and the same 90 percent of the time. a gang is a group of heads you do illegal shit with, period. surenos, crip, locos, nostra familia bla bla bla, all those major ones do have a different style that sets them apart from regular graffiti crews, crips write without b's, bloods write without c's , you can tell the gangs cuz its message first flair second, they want you to read that shit instantly. they do that whole block letter deal, and almost no "graffiti writer" will put that up on a seious level. thats not what gangs do...gangs are a group of people who have rivalries against another group of people. a crew is a group of people who hang out and do shit together. you don't see writers driving around town looking for people doing graff and do a drive by on them... BIG difference.

Well it depends where u live..if u actually live in a place where they have real gangs..well cross their shit out but dont put your tag beside it ANND seeing as how you misspelled crip you probably live in an area like me with a bunch of rich white french fags who think theyre all raw..so do everything in your power to piss them off
in my city, all these "gangbangers" are just middle school kids trying to be hard. so every time I come across a crip tag I put a huge X over it with blue paint; punks don't know who to point the finger at. that's the only "gang" that actually tags around here though, haven't seen any blood, latin king, etc etc....
There's a gang around here, the NTC, ******s that care, they sell pills out the front of the club smack the buyer out, steal the pills back and repeat. I don't like them, they layed beat down on me and my boy at a party and I sense there will be another after we hit up all over their white van. On the other hand there are a load of sole graff related gangs like one sick addiction and after hours who might have beef though keep it to lining and the occasional crew smash on which is nothing compared to the shit the NTC dish out, 10 big maoris onto two or three crackers isn't cool.

heh, fucking owned in any case, i def. agree with both BigEl and also the comparing apples to oranges comment. what i've understood graffiti to be is generally a way to be noticed and get a message out or just your name. gangs want the attention and writers also want the attention. i don't know it just seems like the only difference in the graffiti is the message you give through it. but then again there aren't any gangs around me so thats just my 2 cents.
I hear what you're saying and agree to an extent, 'cept gangs are involved in a variety of crimes, whereas serious crews are generally involved in one....Just graffiti. That in itself is the big difference. Around here, the gangs are reasonably serious, but their graff is straight up ugly and the general confusion it creates with the public frusterates me and makes my hobby difficult. My wifes family knows I write. Their first question was " so why did you join a gang?" Dealing with the preconceptions sucks. I hate gangs to an unhealthy extent. It's become a deep prejudice. I'm trying to let go of some of that, but it's hard when kids I've painted with get jumped in their own neighborhood for absolutely nothing. My boy was walking to his house when some dickhole asked him what he claimed. He said nothing. The guy asked what he wanted to claim. He said nothing. The guy pulled his hoodie over his head and beat him to the ground. Another guy came out from the house down and beat him too. For nothing. That's gay. You don't see graffiti writers pull that shit. Anyways, Because of the continually blurring lines between gangs and crews, I dropped the 2 crews I wrote with and joined a 4 element crew. I don't regret it for a minute. They give me exposure on a huge level, and if I were to ever get heated up, they can throw a festival and use the funds to help with my defense. That's ill. I like the variety of talent I rep as well. I'm not just repping writers, I'm repping b-boys, DJ's, MC's, producers, shit, we even got a couple skaters, cuzz we don't have boundaries. We throw hip hop events and Raves from Here to Denver, to Seattle, to Bangkok and Japan. That's fuckin sweet.
i believe biggie is talkin the "text book" definition of a gang. from a legal stand point, if theres a crime involved be that killin motha fuckas or breaking the law in general with a spicific group, your a gang.
