Try reading up on positive and negative space. If you want your canvas' to get better I suggest reading up on each of the following: contrast, emphasis, balance, unity, pattern, movement, rhythm, color, value, texture, shape, form, space, and line. (Basic art/design rules) You already have a lot of them down I just pasted them all if you were interested. Design, ma' fuckzz
