No, if you want money back you need a receipt. Most stores are more than happy to give you store credit when you return items. Simply rack an item that is worth a decent amount of money (larger drill bits, electrical equipment - check for the white bars!, etc.) and return it to a different store of the same chain or a store that has the same or similar item. You can then purchase paint with the store credit.
