Interview with Teel One MUL, the man behind the Modern Urban Legends comic book.
BSCI: Please introduce yourself, who are you and where are you from.
Teel: TEEL ONE , Chicago.
BSCI: Since when have you been writing, who/what introduced you to graffiti?
Teel: I started writing in 1989, I grew up on the north side of Chicago on the redline. The neighborhoods where I lived and went to school was where everything was happening. It was an environment that spawned a lot of good graffiti, crews and writers.
BSCI: Tell us about the MUL crew. When was it founded?
Teel: It was founded in 1993.
BSCI: Who are the original members?
Teel: That information is classified. (lol) We usually don’t discuss crew structure.
BSCI: MUL Crew is one of the only crew in the USA painting clean trains. Where is this dedication to paint passenger trains coming from?
Teel: We have always looked to our past for inspiration..
BSCI: You have just released a comic book, tell us more about this project.
Teel: The comic is based on my life stories and things that happened around me growing up in Chicago in the 90s. This period is the basis of most of the stories. Some stories are fictionalized and others are based loosely on real events that happened in my life. An origin story if you will.We thought that our character (Raze) should start off at a point where he’s just figuring everything out. It makes for a good story arc as we watch our character stumble and fall, but always get back up. This is a project I’ve been trying to come out with for more than ten years. It just so happened that all the stars aligned, and the moment presented itself.
BSCI: It is the first comic book you have released?
Teel: Yes. We have done dozens of projects recently, but never a comic book .
BSCI: Any sequel in the work already?
Teel: Yes the second issue is being worked on as you read this interview.
BSCI: Future projects?
Teel: We’re working on tons of things right now as a company. We always have something going on. We have many plans with the comic book such as guest appearances from some of your favorite writers. As well as guest artists that are going to contribute to the series. We are always looking to expand and network. So if anybody would like to collaborate or participate in any of these projects contact us at [email protected]. Stay tuned for the things to come.
